The red colour comes from corrosive iron parts and their sedimentation into iron oxide and hydrooxide.
In 1841 year a french traveller named Jerome Blanqui writes: „Neither the famous Ollioules gorges in Provence, the Pincarbo defile in Spain, the Alps, nor the most ancient mountains of Tirol and Switzerland possess anything that could be compared with what I have seen in Belogradchik".
The unusual forms of Belogradchik rocks are related with interesting legends. The most popular says that centuries ago there was Nunnery. Early every morning the nuns went out to pray to God. The younger among them was Vitinia, she was so beautiful that couldn't hide this fact under the crossrock. The ruomor about her unbelievable beauty spread soon all over the Roman Empire. On the day of Peter she met the roman Antonio. They hided their love long time from the nuns, but after an year the child crying was heard. Vitinia was revealed and the nuns decided to cruise her and expel her from the monastery with her child. At that moment from the hill appeared Antonio riding his white horse. And in that moment happened a miracle. A storm started, a thunder stroke and everything turned into stone- The Monks, The Rider, even Vitinia who turned in Madonna caring her child.
The Belogradchik Fortress is also famous tourist attraction it was built during III century from Romans and it was used as defensive structure up to 1890.
